Chancellor George Osborne has unveiled his eighth budget this lunch time with the usual mix of good and bad news already heatedly being debated by politicians and media experts. One of the headline announcements was the plan to raise £520 million through a new levy on the soft drinks industry, with this money being directed into primary schools and used to fund school sport.
This proposal will double the existing funding made available to schools through the PE and School Sport funding already available and will come into place in the next two years. Mr Osborne said ” I am not prepared to look back at my time here in Parliament, doing this job and saying to my children’s generation ‘I’m sorry. We knew there was a problem with sugary drinks. We knew it caused disease. But we ducked the difficult decisions and we did nothing'”.
Steve Jones, CEO and Co-founder of Sport4Kids, responded to this announcement “This is a historical moment. We as S4K, and all stakeholders, must now support all schools to build the capabilities to deliver the vision of the Chancellor. We must now promote the length and breadth of sports available to schools and help inspire every child to become more active”
