Frequently Asked Questions
Naturally you will have questions about registering your child for a new activity. Here are some of our most common FAQs…
Of course! We believe that it is vitally important that you are able to see whether the Sport4Kids activities are for you and your child. The trial session is designed to allow you to see what Sport4Kids activities have to offer. However, we do emphasise that a child may need more than one session in order to make the most of their time with us and only expect around 30% participation for the first lesson. Most children will not have participated in instructor led activities prior to their visit and this can take time to get used to. After your initial trial session, our experienced coaching team will be able answer any questions that you may have and offer advice on your child’s experience. Click here to select your nearest venue and book your free session.
Typically, we advise that parents arrive with their child at the venue 5 minutes prior to the start of the class. This allows the coaching team time to get to know you and your child (younger children will usually be hiding behind your leg!) and gradually introduce them to the sport. The child will then partake in the activities with the rest of the class and the parent can be as involved or uninvolved as they choose.
S4K Rugby caters for toddlers and kids from 18 months to 14 years (depending on location).
It all depends on the age of your child as we have specialist classes designed for different ranges. You can see the information below. If your child falls on the boundary between two groups, we recommend parents to book the younger or older age groups based on their child’s confidence level. The coaching team will be able to recommend the best class after your taster lesson.
- S4K Toddlers – 18 months to 3 years
- S4K Cubs – 3 years to 4.5 years
- S4K Lions – 4.5 years to 6 years
- S4K Academy – 6 years to 14 years
The cost of S4K classes varies dependant on sport and location across the UK. You can find your closest venue and activity by clicking here. The venue pages will display information on prices under the FAQs section.
We include a sport kit for your child to wear in the initial membership fee, however, your child is not obliged to wear it on every visit. As long as your child wears clothing that will keep them at a safe temperature during exercise and allow them freedom to move, they will have no problems participating in Sport4Kids activities. Due to health and safety regulations however, shoes must be worn at all times.
We encourage all parents to bring a drink for their child and in the summer months, we often have outdoor space available. We therefore encourage parents to bring the necessary sun protection (sunscreen, hat etc). While the British weather is unpredictable, we may have a couple of sunny days!
All of our venues have indoor facilities and most also have outdoor facilities. Our S4K Lions and above may play outside at certain venues, but this will be detailed on each specific venue webpage. During the Autumn, Winter and early Spring months, classes are held indoors, but when the opportunity arises in the Summer, we endevour to take the S4K classes outside.
Sport4Kids coaches are truly special. It takes 4 months and 24 examinations to move past the trainee level of coach. Coaches graduate through our Coaching Development Pathway, which involves technical coaching, child behaviour management, child psychology and safeguarding. All coaches are DBS checked and extremely passionate about what they do too!
Our classes do not stop for half-term or the summer holidays so we are always on hand to entertain your children. As a rule, it is generally safe to assume that we are operating. We will of course communicate with you if there are any planned or last minute changes.
As children reach the age of 6 years, they are able to take part in the non-profit S4K Rugby Club and play against local league sides in RFU registered leagues and tournaments. This allows them to pit their skills against the best oppositions in the area.
Your child’s subscription effectively ensures that a place is reserved for them every week. Unfortunately because we have venue and coaching costs regardless of attendance, we are unable to refund or “add on” classes where your child does not attend. If we were to allow this to happen, class prices would ultimately increase. We do however, allow your child to “Send a Friend” in their absence. If you are going to be away for two or more weeks, you can email us and we can adjust the payment plan in advance up to 3 times per year. Please see our Terms and Conditions for more information.
S4K Toddlers and Cubs classes last 45 minutes, although we encourage parents to arrive 5 minutes early in order to have some play time with their child and allow them to settle. S4K Lions and Academy classes last 60-90 minutes as they feature game time.
Parents and guardians play an active role in their children’s progress at S4K. A large part of the lesson involves teaching parents how to teach their child and Practice@Home using our curriculum. For this reason we ask parents to stay with their child at the lesson.
Yes! We actively encourage both girls and boys to attend and usually have a blend of male and female coaches at our lessons.
Definitely – we encourage grandparents and relatives to come and watch their child’s astounding skills. Siblings are also welcome, although we do ask that parents ensure that they do not disrupt the session.
