Recruiting Coaches

Where can I recruit coaches?

The recruitment of high quality individuals to become S4K Sports Coaches is the key growth lever to the business and requires a number of avenues of marketing across the year.  There is a need to recruit a blend of individuals, including Full Timers, Apprentices, Part-Timers and Casual Team Members.  Where we recruit coaches from, depends on the above.

Recruitment is something that should take place all year as we shoot for 120% coverage of the coaching squad, to ensure that we have progression and succession plans in the event that individuals leave S4K or we need to shake the squad up.  Of course we are always trying to grow, so talented individuals should not be overlooked.

Full Timers

These individuals tend to have some experience within the sector and then learn the S4K Way via our Training Pathways. They are often between 19-23 years of age (although not exclusively) and possess good interpersonal skills for relationship maintenance with parents and schools. They tend to be recruited via job board (e.g. Indeed, Total Jobs) or via Linked In (this is particularly useful for those who are frustrated at other organisations and looking for a new challenge).

Apprentices

These individuals tend to be identified in their final year of college.  They are employed on a 30 hour per week contract (can be increased) at S4K and study a Level 2 (GSCE equivalent), 3 (A Level) or 4 in Sports Coaching. They will have lessons / study time allocated for 6 hours of their working week and also complete their Training Badges via the S4K University. Each franchise needs to establish a close working relationship with local colleges, universities and schools.  You can read our article on how to build strong relationships with these institutions here.

Part-Timers

These individuals tend to work a few hours per week, mainly at the weekend in Skills Classes or in Academies.  They are normally school or college students (15+ years) and are trained on the S4K Training Badge pathways for the relevant sport once they start.  They are hired via advertisements that are sent out by Careers Advisors at schools and colleges.  A subsection of part-timers also work in our Home Club / Wrap Around Care environment from 3-6pm during the week around their studies.  These individuals are best recruited via social media recruitment campaigns (e.g. Facebook).  A word of warning – you will “kiss a lot of frogs” with this method as it drives a lot of applications, but you will also find the individuals who suit the business need.  We also recommend carrying your business cards around with you so that you can hand them out when you receive good service in supermarkets, restaurants and beyond.

Casual Team Members

These individuals tend to be returning students (i.e. during the university holidays) or employed teachers who wish to work during the school holidays.  They are recruited via social media advertisements (e.g. Facebook) or via Indeed.

Work Experience

Schools and colleges often require their students to gain Work Experience (WEX) as part of their overall curriculum or if they are studying sports as a qualification, students often need to fulfil a specific number of hours of WEX.  Schools, colleges and universities can be contacted so that we can partner to provide this experience.  Students who are carrying out their Duke of Edinburgh Award are another type of individual who are required to volunteer.  These students can be deployed in our Skills Classes, Academies and Holiday Camps to fulfil their coaching hours.
