The FA Women’s and Girls’ Football
Exciting times ahead for women’s football in England since The FA launched The FA WSL, a new elite, summer league for women’s football. The FA believes the WSL will be the key platform to drive the women’s game forward. Click here to visit the FA’s website: www.thefa.com/womens/
The top tier of women’s football is being played during the summer months, showcasing England’s best players. It also sees games regularly televised live alongside a weekly highlights package through broadcast partner ESPN. Click here to visit The FA WSL website, or on Twitter @FAWSL and on Facebook by clicking here.
World stage …
We have been doing well on the world stage too. Hope Powell’s England team returned from the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2011 in Germany after narrowly losing out to France on penalties in the quarter final. England’s Group B opponents Japan went on to win the World Cup with England the only team to beat the Japanese on their way to the Final. Both Jill Scott and Alex Scott made the FIFA All-Star team.
Womens FA Cup …
The dream of the FA Cup is there too! The draw for the 2011-12 FA Women’s Cup had a record 276 clubs participating, with the ultimate goal being to follow in Arsenal and Bristol Academy’s footsteps and making the showpiece Final. This year Birmingham City won The FA Women’s Cup for the first time ever by beating Chelsea in The Final after a penalty shoot-out read more hear … The Final Match Report
Womens & Girls Football Trends…
The nation’s No.1 female team participation sport currently has 1.38m women and girls up and down the country playing the game regularly. Sport England’s Active People survey in 2011 highlighted that 275,300 adult women play some form of football in England. This demonstrates that women’s football is now the third largest team sport behind only men’s football and men’s cricket. Indeed, FIFA has recently confirmed that there are 29m females playing football across the world. Click here to see the current trends in women’s football.
Mixed football has now been extended to children up to U13s. 42 per cent of the 2.5m children to participate in The FA Tesco Skills program in the last three years are girls, while 20 per cent of the 106 Skills Coaches were female, too.
Over 22,000 females have successfully attained FA coaching qualifications (including 170 Level 3 – UEFA ‘B’ – coaches) and full-time Women’s Football Development Officers (WFDOs) are employed across the country in the County FAs to support local female football. The number of female referees has reached 843, an increase of 12 per cent since 2008, and The FA has launched a specific Female Referees Strategy and Female Ambassador scheme.
Women’s football has a well-regarded player pathway and a strong Talent Development infrastructure. There are currently 30 licensed FA Centres of Excellence in operation across England providing weekly quality coaching and a localized fixture program for ‘excellent’ girls from the age of 7-17. A new program of FA Player Development Centres will start in September and will provide talented girls who play in grassroots clubs some extra support. Strategy and Principles for Girls Football Development
The FA has its own strategy for the development and prosperity of girls and women football with its impressive milestones and goals for the top of the game and you can access a copy of the published strategy by clicking here The FA Womens Football Strategy
Our own Sport 4 Kids advice to parents and our own version for the development of girls football is made of the following principles.
- Build From Grass Routes – From the parents to the children building near to home the opportunity to get involved with football and play is the most important thing. From the garden to the local field to schools and community halls all are opportunities to make football accessible for our girls. From an early age Sport4Kids makes football accessible to toddler girls in our local community sessions. Example venues for Tots to 11 year olds can be found by clicking here Toddler and Girl Football Venues.
- Concentrate on Skills – Girls football has the benefit of not being men’s football with all that testosterone flowing and the cry of get it up field hoof ball that we often here is the scourge of the British men’s game. With the physical aspects being less of a hindrance girls football can concentrate of the best techniques, the development of skills and the passing model of football that has prospered the Spanish and Dutch football masters.
- Not Obsess About Competition. At Sport4Kids we believe in promoting passing, skills and technique above competition. Competition and games have their place but we believe at Sport4Kids that the development of skills and small sided games are the way forward for girls football to prosper. To build confidence and personal development for each individual and increase the appeal and enjoyment of football for girls. This starts with toddlers and girls of all ages to provide the depth of talent and skills to make girls football the most attractive of sporting activities for our children. For more information about child development in girls football click here… Child Development Through Football.
Promote Teamwork: The greatest teams all had great individuals but what set them apart was great teamwork. Girls football can prosper through the recognition of teamwork and togetherness. The camaraderie and self-worth from emphasizing teamwork in girls football can make it attractive as attractive and as highly valued as any other activity for girls.
Promote Creativity – The promotion of creativity and self expression can build a brand of girls football that is both attractive on the eye and also more enjoyable for the individuals playing. Making tricks, aesthetic beauty a full part of the style of play, the way of winning and beating opponents and teams will build the overall enjoyment and participation. We believe that it will also help build a more attractive and compelling product at the top of the game.
To gain create greater exposure, fan base and viewing figures for the women’s game. It all starts with the girls and Sport 4 Kids promoted the use of the Coerver method made so famous by the Dutch masters and their approach to total football. Creativity, tricks, skills and imagination has to be at the heart of the women’s game for it to differentiate itself from men’s football and other attractions.
Make Football More Inclusive
We believe that more opportunity, access and equal passion and support for girls is a fundamental requirement. Making girls and boys football as one an all inclusive would encourage our girls to both participate and provide the opportunity for more of them to excel.
Make It Always Available
Make more classes in more schools in our local community halls, fields and leisure centers right across the country. It is our mission at S4K to spread the availability of classes and teams across the country.
Role Models
Role models including female coaches, fellow girls in classes and bringing mums and dads together would provide more of an examplke and help girls feel included, wnated and see others participating in a fun game.
Mixed Teams
Mixed teams up to 11 years of age is our philosophy. The FA are loking to encorage the mixed teams up to 14 years and this has to be comended.
