Frequently Asked Questions
Naturally you will have questions about registering your child for a new activity. Here are some of our most common FAQs…
Camp Activities, Structures and Groups
The camps are open from 9.00am to 5.00pm, but you’re welcome to drop off and pick up any time between.
Our camps are Ofsted registered. Ofsted make sure we meet all National Childcare Regulations by approving our policies and procedures, interviewing staff and by inspecting the camps regularly. In short Ofsted ensures your child receives the quality of care you expect and demand. It is your assurance of our high standards
At the majority of our S4K Camp venues we accept children aged between 5 to 13 years. Some of our Camps are Early Years registered and cater for children from the age of 4 years – they must be at least 4 years old by 1st September of the current academic year and therefore in Reception at school. Unfortunately 4 year old children who are in Nursery/Rising Reception are not eligible to attend.
Of course! We want everyone to have an amazing day, and we’ll listen to you and your childs requirements and individual needs to make sure you are both happy.
We typically allow 1 member of staff to 15 children, with additional trained staff scheduled in for particularly busy periods.
Absolutely. We divide all the activities into at least two age groups and keep siblings and groups of friends together so they can share their experiences
The timetables for the camps are published here on the website under each specific camp. The timetable is also available at the camp site. Each week, we rotate between sports including football, tag rugby, hockey, basketball, dance and some more specialist activities including indoor curling and thratching. Of course, we also have our themed days – so Quidditch is offered on our Movie Day and Kabbadi and Gaelic Football on our International Sports Day! Some sites offer specialist activities, such as swimming and tennis, so please speak to your camp team for more information and check the schedule above in advance of popping along.
Your Child
Children should dress in comfortable clothing appropriate for the weather and we suggest you do not send them with new or valuable clothing or belongings. The need for any specialist kit (e.g. swimming) will be communicated well in advance. All clothing and belongings should be named.
Please provide and apply sun protection cream each morning in hot weather. We ask that you show your child how to do this before they attend camp. Spray on sun lotion is a good option for younger children as the staff can do this for them and the children can then rub in themselves. Staff will remind children at break times to apply sun cream and help younger ones if needed. It is also a good idea to send a broad-brimmed hat that shades the face, neck and ears and where we have an outdoor swimming pool provide your child with an additional T-shirt to protect their back from the sun.
All children should bring a lunchbox to camp, however, as we do not have refrigeration facilities at the camps, we suggest you provide a small cool bag (lunch box size) containing a frozen carton of juice or a small ice pack. This will keep the contents cold until lunchtime.
We provide any equipment necessary for all the activities, from footballs to tennis rackets, so there is no need to send your children with anything other than packed lunch and sun protection. Please ensure all clothing is named and that your child brings home all items at the end of the day. It can be quite a challenge to locate lost property after children have left the camp!
Valuable objects such as mobile phones, games consoles, iPods, watches etc. are not allowed at our camps. There is no real opportunity to use these items during the day and children only become disappointed if they are lost or broken. It is therefore easier for everyone to avoid bringing these items in and just concentrate on the fun.
Please ensure all of your children’s belongings are named, this makes it easier for staff to identify any lost property items and ensure that they are returned to their owner straight away. If you realise your child has misplaced an item whilst the camp is still open please contact the camp straight away and you can agree a time that is best for you to collect it. Once the camp has closed for the season, all lost property goes to our warehouse in Bagshot, if you have lost an item during a camp, we will keep hold of it for 7 days. After this period, we donate any items to charity.
Every child receives a personalised certificate at the end of their day with us, together with a verbal report from one of our coaches. We are happy to boast about your child’s achievements for as long as you can listen!
Yes – please tell us anything we need to know about your child’s health when you make your booking e.g. diabetes, epilepsy, serious allergies and so on. In some cases we may need to send you some more forms and get additional information from you regarding your child’s needs. The more information you provide us with the better care we can provide for your child.
Members of our camp team will be trained to administer an Epi-Pen in an emergency situation. Parents must inform the camp if their child carries an Epi-Pen.
We’re parents too, so we understand your concerns, but don’t worry we’re well prepared. Qualified first aiders at each camp deal with accidents and illnesses. Fortunately almost everything we have to deal with are grazes on knees, stings and so on and requires no more than a drop of water and some TLC. However should a child suffer a more serious injury or fall ill at camp you will be contacted immediately.
Our S4K Sports Entertainers are the coaches who will be looking after your child. Each site team are highly trained through the S4K University including qualifications in child safeguarding, paediatric first aid, child behaviour management and psychological engagement methods. Your child will be in amazingly energetic, patient and above all, safe hands.
We remember being young and taken to our first holiday camp. A daunting new place, with new people where we were left for a number of hours throughout the school holidays. While we guarantee that our coaching team will make even the most shy child feel entirely welcome and comfortable at our camps, here are a few tips that you can follow to help them settle…
Check out the activities on offer in advance (click here for the timetable) and show them what they will be doing.
Introduce their coaching team to them – show them the photographs above and ask them who they recognise when they arrive at the camp.
Re-assure them that all children feel a little nervous – it is totally normal and they will forget all about it when they are too busy having fun! Remind them that they were nervous when you collect them (and they are bright red from running so much!) – this is a fantastic reassurance mechanism.
In the unlikely event that your child doesn’t settle at camp on their first day, please let us know. Very often by speaking to either our Central Office team or the camp staff the same day or following morning, we can resolve any problems related to your child not settling.
For your further reassurance, if this is your child’s first visit to Sport4Kids and if they are still not happy on the second day of camp, or if you don’t want to try them again after the first day, we can offer you our Money Back Guarantee. All you need to do is call us by lunchtime after the last day they attended and we will refund your booking in full. What’s more, we will give you a £10 voucher for the same child to use when they feel ready to try camp again next year.
This Money Back Guarantee is a genuine offer that applies to all children who are attending Sport4Kids for the first time. No matter how much we try to reassure you that your child will settle in, we appreciate that in some cases this is a major concern. Therefore, we want you to be able to book your child’s first holiday at Sport4Kids, safe in the knowledge that should it not be right for them at this time, you will not lose out financially.
Policies and Procedures
Sport4Kids regularly reviews and updates all of its’ policies and procedures, using feedback from staff, clients, host schools and Ofsted, as well as ongoing advice from local authorities and National Governing Bodies of Sports, to ensure up-to-date and safe systems of work. A summary of some of the policies and procedures are provided below, with full versions available to view at camp or earlier by request. You can also read online versions of our Safeguarding Children, Child Protection and Equality and Diversity policies.
If you have any queries, please reach our team on 0300 303 3866.
Sport4Kids believes that children will flourish best in an atmosphere of mutual respect and encouragement where everyone knows what is expected of them. The group leaders will discuss behaviour with all children at the beginning of every camp day and include an overview of the Sport4Kids Code of Behaviour.
We concentrate on encouraging and reinforcing good behaviour to ensure that all children enjoy their time at camp. Staff treat children with respect, promoting an atmosphere of trust. Any issues are dealt with by our trained staff in an authoritative manner, ensuring that the child understands why the behaviour is unacceptable and how they can avoid a similar talking to in future. These issues are communicated with parents during the handover at collection time.
Bullying is not tolerated in any sense at Sport4Kids and we take any instance of bullying extremely seriously – intervening at the earliest opportunity to find a mutual level of respect.
All staff at Sport4Kids have a duty in law to respond if they suspect a child may be suffering from abuse, or if a child makes a disclosure about abuse. Staff will comply with procedures of the Local Safeguarding Children’s Board (LSCB) as well as guidelines stated by Ofsted. Please click here for our full Safeguarding Policy.
Staff will be sensitive to confidential information and not discuss individual children except with the parents concerned and their line manager as required.
Sport4Kids aims to provide equality of opportunity for all children in our care and takes positive actions to eliminate discrimination. Sport4Kids is committed to the principle of equal opportunities and to ensuring it is applied to all areas of its’ operation.
Sport4Kids promotes good health and encourages children to lead an active lifestyle. Good hygiene practice is promoted at camp. The camp provides water throughout the day and children bring their own packed lunch from home.
Children cannot be accepted at camp if they are ill. The camp holds a list of common communicable diseases and incubation periods. If a child falls ill at camp, parents will be contacted to collect the child from camp.
In hot weather, staff will remind children to apply sun cream. Parents should supply sun cream and show the child how to apply it.
Sport4Kids will do all that is reasonable and practicable to protect the health, safety and welfare of all children in our care, along with staff and any other visitors to our sites. Staff will maintain a positive, proactive and diligent attitude towards health and safety throughout the season, frequently checking all systems and reviewing risk assessments if necessary.
